Landon upsets St. Albans to capture IAC Tennis Championship

On Thursday at St. Albans School, Landon's tennis team pulled off a dramatic 4-2 upset over the host Bulldogs to capture the IAC championship. With the match tightly contested and a crowd gathering around the top doubles court in anticipation of a 3-3 tie, Landon junior Frank Wang clinched the decisive point on the second singles court, winning 6-3, 2-6 (10-3). His victory ignited a celebratory rush from teammates and spectators as the Bears secured their 51st IAC title and snapped regular season champion St. Albans' four-year championship streak.

The win was especially meaningful for Coach W.T. Miller, who called the result emotional and credited his team's hunger and adaptability. Just weeks earlier, St. Albans had defeated Landon in the regular season, and Wang had suffered a lopsided loss in the same singles spot. This time, Miller advised Wang to focus on extending rallies rather than seeking quick winners, a strategy that proved pivotal. Landon also introduced sophomore Roberto Devoto at fourth singles, who delivered a key 6-1, 6-1 victory. Miller emphasized the importance of making adjustments, noting that sticking with the status quo wouldn't have been enough to topple a talented and favored St. Albans squad.
